Corset

Bend and Poise is a studio portrait series inspired by classic fashion photography of the first half of the 20th century, and in particular by Horst P. Horst’s iconic image The Corset. Rather than recreating the original photograph, this series reinterprets its visual language through movement, gesture, and sculptural form.

The focus of the series is the female body as a living sculpture. The corset becomes not only a garment, but a tool that defines line, tension, and rhythm. The model’s pose, the curve of the waist, and the interaction with her own body create a quiet dialogue between strength and vulnerability.

The photographs were created in a home studio using controlled artificial lighting. The black-and-white aesthetic enhances the contrast between light and shadow, allowing form, texture, and gesture to take precedence over colour. The lighting is deliberately cinematic, referencing the visual traditions of early fashion photography and classic Hollywood portraiture.

This series invites the viewer to slow down and observe. It is not about fashion as a trend, but about timeless elegance, body awareness, and the expressive potential of minimal movement.
